Collective Struggles
Schwebel had always responded to his environment reflecting on the land of Israel, its society, and politics. His body of work contains paintings juxtaposing biblical situations to the war in Lebanon, the Palestinian predicament, the Gulf War, the history of the Holocaust, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. These collective struggles are depicted as multi-layered scenes in such locations as New York, modern Jerusalem, and other arenas central to Schwebel’s life.
“For almost twenty years these works have been my response to the wars and threats of wars in Israel, to political intrigues, including murder, and religious conflicts within – and to the excitement of the land.” (Journal entry).
