The Painter and the Muse

“The model for the muse is the woman in his life. Her changing appearances are analogous to the evasiveness of the muse and at the same time reflect their complex relationship”

(Michal Berhendt)

Schwebel’s muse is a recurring figure throughout his oeuvre, reflected

by the image of a woman, whether it be Greta Garbo, Oba-San – his

mentor during his military service in Japan, his wife, or an unrecognized

woman depicted as an angel amongst the Judean hills. The muse

represents Schwebel's  perpetual yearning for a feminine figure

to accompany him' providing comfort and guidance.
