The Painter As Hero
"The model for the artist's image is his closest and most familiar model - himself. Schwebel paints himself painting and deliberating, loving and struggling."
(Michal Berhendt)
From early childhood, Schwebel had to confront pain and loss. A hightened sensitivity to art coupled with his notable drawing skills, led Schwebel to create his own mythological narrative, placing himself as the protagonist or hero, confronting, dealing, and at times combatting situations and antagonists in his world. Creating himself and performing in the spotlight of his narrative, his works exhibit different depictions of figures with which Schwebel identified: whether it be the Dragon Dealer, King David, Charlie Chaplin, or the Three-Sewer-Hitter in the Bronx streets, struggling to make sense of adverse circumstances.
